Donna grew up in Seattle. She attended Roosevelt High School, and can point out places she and her family lived decades ago. Growing up, she anticipated staying local, having a family, and retiring here. She says she never thought that in her 60s, she would become homeless.
Donna’s eviction followed years of chronic illnesses and attempting to obtain SSDI benefits for over 10 years. With over $7,000 in rental debt, her options were limited. She came to Hospitality House ready for assistance, and hopeful for change.
Some days, Donna felt like she was on top of the world, and making progress. Others, she struggled to get out of bed due to her mental and physical health. Finding how hard to push herself without becoming overwhelmed was a delicate balancing act.
One of Donna’s goals was to obtain extra income and open an online business. Donna was diligent in doing her research for her online store, learning what “missing pieces” she needed, like a business license, and business phone number. She continued to pursue this dream and hoped it would be possible to maintain it when she found housing.
Donna’s work ethic and business pursuits made her a perfect candidate for a transitional housing program focused on helping women who are pursuing employment. After the interview process, Donna was accepted into the two-year program. There, she will have the ability to decrease her debt, grow her business, and continue to pursue stability.
There’s a little less laughter in Hospitality House with Donna gone. Her wonderful sense of humor, thoughtfulness, and bright personality are missed, but we know that Donna is going to continue to achieve incredible things, and we hope to someday share her store and offerings with all of you!
