It can be easy to forget that your donations are going to real people, real women who need your help. That’s why we ask our residents for a quote monthly that we can add to our donations needed list; it’s a way to connect you directly to the women you’re helping. Everything you send to Hospitality House is for our current and future clients, and there’s nothing sweeter than being able to give a woman the right hairbrush for their hair type , or a sweatshirt that fits just right. More often than not, we’re met with a happy dance when we hand a resident an item she requested! The above quote was given by a resident who was gifted with a wax for her hair. She was provided with the exact product and brand she requested only days after she asked for it. She explained that she needed it to be able to prepare for her job interview with confidence-a job interview which she nailed!
Each donation stands for so much: rest, joy, comfort, peace, empathy, trust, and so much more. Your donations provide that, and we can never thank you enough for it!

Each month without fail, we share our needs and begin receiving donations from our list within mere days! Last month, you provided our residents with brand new summer pajamas to stay cool, skincare to help them feel confident, nutritious foods, supplies to help keep their home clean, and so much more. Thank you for being the community they can count on month after month!

Finally, some Summer weather! The heat and sunshine call for an adjustment to some of our requests. Can you help us supply residents with some cool Summer PJs so residents can beat the heat in the air conditioning, or some sunglasses so our ladies can enjoy being outside?

Happy May! This month’s Donations Needed list got a big update. We asked for a lot of personal supplies like makeup, body wash, and vitamins over the last couple of months, and our donors showed up and showed out! Knocking those off the list meant we could make room for more house oriented needs, like a new broom, a counter organizer for the bathroom (9 residents means we need to be creative with storage space!), and surge protectors to replace some of our older ones.
The Donations Needed list gets tweaked throughout the month and is based off of asks from our residents, things staff or volunteers see a need for, and just things that have maybe seen better days, like our silverware drawer organizer. It takes such a weight off knowing we don’t have to worry about running to the store to get paper towels because we were out, or groceries because some of our residents haven’t received their food stamps yet. It gives staff and volunteers the ability to focus fully on meeting the needs of our residents on a more emotional, mental, personal level. Best of all, it means our residents know they’re supported by their community-the people they pass in the grocery store or meet at the bus stop.

A common compliment to hear is that homeless individuals are so strong and courageous. It’s true, they accomplish so much with so little. They push on when they’re exhausted and keep fighting. Wouldn’t it be nice, though, if they didn’t have to be strong or fight? If systems didn’t fail them, if abusers faced justice, if mental health issues were addressed differently, if dollars stretched just a little further?
Hospitality House aims to be a place where our residents don’t have to be tough or courageous. Our ladies are welcome to share their fears with us, to cry, laugh, build trust and tear down walls. Sometimes we forget how exhausting it feels when you have to be strong and there’s no other choice. I’m sure many of us have heard that you can’t pour from an empty cup, but that’s precisely what homeless individuals manage to do-they push and they try and they pour from their cups to get a single ounce of relief.
You, our donors, help so much in refilling those cups. You give these women a chance to rest, and a safe space to just exist. Thank you for allowing our women to be something other than strong or courageous. Thank you for letting them be who they are, and supporting them so they can simply be.

Every single woman coming through our doors has a unique life experience, but often we have observed a pattern emerging beginning the moment a new resident walks through the doors.
There is always fear that shows itself when arriving at the shelter, sometimes only one bag in hand. Then delight when a new resident enjoys their first home-cooked dinner brought by one of our meal providers. Then they get a warm shower, clean clothes, they make their bed, and start to make Hospitality House home. Each resident develops their own routine, and with that, a sense of comfort.
The donations needed list is made to aid in providing each resident comfort. The new pajamas you donate gives each woman the ability to relax with a new peace of mind, the mascara you bought on sale allows her to feel confident to her job interview, the blanket your quilting group made allows her to feel like she’s home. Residents will often take items like these with them when their time comes to leave. They want to take their comfort with them, so of course they can take their favorite blanket or the coffee mug they’ve used every morning for the last 3 months. Your donations give them a piece of home to take with them.
